What is the average approval rate for SSDI applicants?

When people can no longer work due to debilitating medical conditions, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits are often their last line of defense against financial hardship. SSDI benefits provide monthly payments for those who cannot work due to severe, chronic medical conditions.

Unfortunately, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is notoriously strict about applying disability standards when reviewing applications for benefits. Many people have likely heard stories about the SSA initially rejecting everyone who applies for benefits. Potential applicants who understand actual approval rates can use that information as they pursue the SSDI benefits they need because they cannot work.

Initial approval vs. approval after appeal

The majority of SSDI applicants do not receive benefits. The SSA provides information about annual approval rates at every stage of the application and appeals process.

The overall annual final approval rate, on average, between 2010 and 2019 was 31%. However, the initial approval rate is lower than that.

When people first apply, only approximately 21% of applicants receive immediate approval. The remaining 10% of successful applicants secure their benefits through the appeals process.

Applicants need to ensure that they avoid mistakes when completing necessary paperwork and that they have adequate documentation to support their applications. They must be ready to appeal promptly after receiving a rejection notice from the SSA.

For most people already struggling with the consequences of a debilitating medical issue, navigating the SSDI application process alone can prove overwhelming. Getting experienced legal guidance can be a smart decision for those who need benefits and who worry about the possibility of a rejection or the need to appeal.
