Your Well-Being Is Our Priority

Is it time to review your disability status?

If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or long-term disability (LTD) benefits, it is important to understand that your eligibility is not guaranteed forever. Periodic reviews are a routine part of the process, and staying prepared for a renewal or continuing disability review (CDR) can be important when it comes to keeping your benefits. Knowing when and how to respond can help you avoid unnecessary delays or denials.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) conducts CDRs to determine whether individuals still meet the definition of “disabled” under its guidelines. For those with long-term disability insurance—whether provided by an employer or a private policy—insurers also periodically reassess eligibility. These reviews can occur every few years, depending on the nature of your medical condition and whether improvement is expected.

Taking action to preserve your benefits

Signs it might be time to renew your status include receiving a formal notice from the SSA or your LTD insurer asking for updated medical records, documentation of current symptoms and/or completed questionnaires. It is also wise to proactively prepare if your condition has not improved, or if you anticipate questions about your ongoing eligibility.

Continue seeing your healthcare providers regularly and ensure they understand the nature and limitations of your condition. Medical records should reflect consistent and current treatment, functional limitations and your inability to work.

For SSDI recipients, maintaining communication with the SSA and promptly responding to CDR-related mail is necessary. Ignoring review requests can lead to termination of benefits, even if you still qualify. LTD insurers may also ask for updated records, physician statement or functional capacity evaluations. They often require proof that you remain unable to perform not only your past job but possibly any job—depending on the terms of your policy.

Staying informed and organized is the best way to avoid disruptions. Renewing your disability status may feel intimidating, but with proper planning and legal support, you can strengthen your case and protect the benefits you rely on.
